Former Texans RB Loses Another Chance at Making NFL Roster in 2025

The NFL offseason is flying by, and a former Houston Texans RB just lost out on another playing opportunity. Will he find a new home before it's too late?

The Houston Texans' offseason is about to kick into its next gear with the eventual arrival of this year's organized team activities (OTAs). After a successful rookie minicamp over the weekend, the Texans will return to action when OTAs begin on Wednesday, May 28, giving fans a better idea of what next season's 53-man roster will look like.

With just over two weeks to kill before OTAs start, Texans fans have the perfect opportunity to research what some of the franchise's former players are up to this offseason. Unfortunately, things aren't going great for everyone, including an ex-Houston player who just missed out on another shot at an NFL job.

Former Texans RB D'Onta Foreman Shafted as Trey Sermon Signs With Steelers

On Sunday, NFL insider Jordan Schultz reported that the Pittsburgh Steelers have signed free-agent RB Trey Sermon to a one-year contract. Considering how Sermon was anything but productive last season (2.8 yards per carry), his signing is embarrassing news for pretty much every available runner, including ex-Texans RB D'Onta Foreman.

Foreman, 29, got his start in the NFL with the Texans when he was drafted 89th overall in 2017. The local favorite was coming off an incredible 2016 college football season with the Texas Longhorns, having paced the Big 12 in carries (323), rushing yards (2,028), touchdowns (15), and total plays (330) en route to winning the Doak Walker Award as the nation's top running back.

Foreman's first taste of NFL action saw him record 327 rushing yards and two TDs on 78 carries across 10 games as a rookie. Much to his dismay, though, his rookie campaign prematurely ended when he tore his Achilles in Week 11, sidelining him for the rest of the year and all but one regular-season game in 2018.

The Texans reportedly had enough of Foreman's off-field personality in 2019, prompting his being placed on waivers before Year 3 began. He was eventually claimed by the Colts, leading to his spending time with four other franchises before hitting free agency this spring.

Foreman most recently played the 2024 season with the Cleveland Browns, turning 71 catches into 232 rushing yards while hauling in six balls for another 54 yards in 11 games. He averaged a career-worst 3.3 yards per carry while finishing with his worst Pro Football Focus run grade (58.5) since his rookie year, both of which are likely playing a role in his being unsigned.

With the NFL getting younger with each passing year, an aging RB like Foreman must find ways to make an impact to avoid being replaced by a younger, healthier option.

The clock is ticking for Foreman when it comes to potentially playing in the NFL next season. Teams usually have a good idea of what their roster will look like after OTAs are done, meaning the ex-Texans RB could be stuck on the outside looking in if he doesn't land a new contract soon.
