With NFL training camps starting next month, followed by preseason games in August, most, if not all, teams have QB depth charts locked in.
The Houston Texans are one of several teams with at least four quarterbacks on their 90-man roster. C.J. Stroud is entrenched as the starter heading into his third year, with Davis Mills likely being the QB2 for the 2025 season.
However, the Texans must figure out if they will carry a third quarterback. If so, will it be rookie Graham Mertz or Kedon Slovis? Those questions will be answered over the next several weeks.
At the same time, a few notable free agent quarterbacks are still waiting to be invited to training camp after not getting much interest in OTAs and minicamp. Former Houston signal-caller Jeff Driskel is one of those quarterbacks sitting in that category.
The 32-year-old Driskel most recently appeared in a game for the Washington Commanders last season. Driskel spent the 2024 campaign as the QB3/emergency option behind Marcus Mariota and Jayden Daniels.
Before landing with the Commanders, the veteran QB spent time with the Arizona Cardinals and Cleveland Browns in 2023. Driskel started in Cleveland’s regular-season finale against the Cincinnati Bengals.
However, Texans fans remember Driskel spending two years in Houston. In his first year with the club, the veteran quarterback only appeared in one game. But that changed in his second year.
Driskel appeared in seven games during the 2022 season, where he also made two starts. He completed 14-of-20 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown. The veteran added 75 rushing yards on 20 carries.
The veteran quarterback didn’t do anything special under center, but he, along with Mills, served as placeholders for the eventual selection of C.J. Stroud in the 2023 NFL Draft.
That said, it’s not surprising that Driskel hasn’t seen much interest as the QB position is getting younger and more mobile. Most teams are willing to take a chance on a young quarterback that they can develop on the practice squad, and not a 32-year-old quarterback.
Now, that’s not to say Driskel won’t get any interest sometime or during the season. Teams are always holding workouts throughout the season, and Driskel has the requisite experience to be a good voice in a QB room.
