The Houston Texans have done an impressive job of reshaping their cornerback room with their selections in the first few rounds of the NFL Draft in recent years, and those investments have paid dividends.
After being one of the worst units in the entire NFL at the beginning of this decade, Houston's defensive rank has steadily increased since. They checked in as the second-worst defense in the league during the 2020 season, but the front office turned that weakness into a strength as the Texans' defense was the seventh-best the NFL had to offer this past season.
While Derek Singley Jr. and Kamari Lassiter are the cornerbacks of the future in Houston, a former Pro Bowl defensive back who was part of the defense during the 2023 season has finally found a new home in the NFL after spending the majority of the offseason searching for his next opportunity.
Former Texans CB Shaquill Griffin Joins Seattle After Months on Market
Shaquill Griffin was signed by the Texans during the 2023 season and appeared in 10 games for the franchise, including six starts, before being released by the franchise in late November of that year. His stint in Houston was not exactly a memorable one as he recorded 33 total tackles, four pass deflections, and one interception before the front office cut him loose.
Now, Griffin returns to the franchise that drafted him, the Seattle Seahawks. While some of his best seasons as a pro came in the Pacific Northwest, Griffin is less than a month away from his 30th birthday, and, despite a bounce-back performance with the Minnesota Vikings this past season, it is hard to envision Griffin becoming more effective as he ages.
Texans fans will have an opportunity to see just how much Griffin has left in the tank this coming season, as Houston is set to travel to Seattle for a nationally televised matchup against the Seahawks on Monday, Oct. 20. With Nico Collins, Christian Kirk, and Tank Dell lined up on the outside for Houston, we'll see just how much CJ Stroud chooses to pick on his former teammate.
