Texans News: Steven Nelson Gets Elevated to Chiefs Active Roster
Nelson played on the Texans from 2022-2023, starting in 31 games for Houston. In those appearances, he logged 115 total tackles, 19 pass deflections, and five interceptions. The 32-year-old decided to retire after the 2023 season, but that didn't last long.
He signed with the Chiefs practice squad in December 2024. Even though he hasn't played for Kansas City, his experience was extremely valuable.
There's a very slim chance that Nelson will step on the field on Sunday but you never know. During the 2023 season with the Texans, he logged a 72.4 overall grade (39th ranked corner) and 73.7 coverage grade. He also had a 70.6 passer rating allowed, showcasing he can still play good football.
The Oregon State product can step in if needed. The Chiefs will have A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith lining up on opposite side.
Kansas City recently got cornerback Jaylen Watson back. He was activated in January ahead of the Divisional Round game against Houston after suffering a broken fibula and tibia in his ankle.
They will have Trent McDuffie, Joshua Williams, and Nazeeh Johnson ahead of Nelson on the depth chart. Despite failing to log a snap for this group, he'll be suited up in the biggest game of his career.
Nelson came into the league as a third-round pick by Kansas City in the 2015 NFL Draft. He played for them from 2015-2018 and now is back with them seven years later.
