With the MLB regular season ending next Sunday, several teams across the league, including the Houston Astros, are fighting for a playoff berth. Houston fans hope that this team can make one last push, as there are no more chances after the 28th.

Meanwhile, many teams are still making changes to their roster in hopes of finding a spark. We saw Isaac Paredes return from the 60-day injured list, which should help Houston for the final games. However, former Astros reliever Chris Devenski wasn’t so lucky, as the New York Mets decided to part ways on Sunday.

According to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com, the Mets designated Devenski for assignment. The 35-year-old Devenski has spent the entire 2025 season within the Mets’ organization, pitching in the big leagues and minors.

The right-handed reliever has pitched well this season in the big leagues when given a chance. In 13 relief appearances (one start) with the Mets, the former Astros pitcher posted a 2.16 ERA and held opponents to a .179 batting average at the plate.

Devenski has allowed 10 hits, five walks, four earned runs (one home run), while picking up 14 strikeouts in 16.2 innings.

As for his time in minor leagues this season, the ex-Astro had a 0-3 record, 3.35 ERA, and four saves across 35 appearances (one start) at Triple-A Syracuse. Houston fans aren’t surprised to see Devenski have success, as they saw it years ago when he made his debut in 2016.

In his first two years in Houston, Devenski posted a sub-3.00 ERA (2.16 and 2.68) during the regular season. However, Devenski couldn’t duplicate that success in the 2017 playoffs, as he had a 9.00 ERA across eight appearances. The Astros ultimately won the World Series during that season.

After a good first two years in Houston, Devenski’s last three seasons were not. His ERA went up to 4.18 in 2018, then 4.83 in 2019, and finally 14.73 in 2020. The veteran hurler only made four appearances during the COVID-19-shortened season.

Now, with only 6-7 games remaining in the season for many teams, the former Astros reliever will likely not get picked up before the season ends. Therefore, the next opportunity he’ll have to get signed will be this winter, as Devenski hopes to land a major league deal.
