Star cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. had his breakout campaign in 2024, earning his first Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors. Following his injury-riddled first two seasons in the NFL, the former third-overall pick was able to stay healthy all season and proved to everyone he is one of the best cornerbacks in the league.
Now that the former LSU star is entering his fourth season in the league, he is extension-eligible. Even though he can technically be kept under team control through 2026 without an extension, he has made it clear his desire for a new contract this offseason.
Stingley has also made it clear that he would like to stay in Houston. In an interview on Tuesday, he doubled down on that statement, per the Houston Chronicle.

Derek Stingley Puts Pressure on the Texans Front Office Ahead of Extension Talks
In his appearance on The Pivot Podcast during the Pro Bowl week in Orlando, Stingley sat with Ryan Clark, Channing Crowder, and Fred Taylor. The star cornerback reiterated his desire to be a Texan "for the rest of [his] career."
This will likely kickstart a fascinating negotiation between Stingley and the Texans. The 23-year-old's new contract has a chance to reset the market for cornerbacks.
The market was recently set by the Miami Dolphins, who signed Jalen Ramsey to a three-year, $72.3 million extension. The $24.1 million average annual value made Ramsey the highest-paid CB in the league. The Broncos' deal for Patrick Surtain II has the most guaranteed salary at $77.5 million among all corners.
Stingley, six years younger than Ramsey at the time of this extension, should beat that AAV. Recently, Dan Graziano of ESPN predicted a four-year, $104 million deal with $80 million guaranteed for Stingley.
In the same interview, Stingley revealed that he is not planning on holding out from team activities while negotiating his deal, giving WR Nico Collins as an example from last year. Collins ended up signing a three-year, $72.75 million deal with the Texans last offseason, and Stingley is looking to do the same, except for a larger amount.
