The Texans head coach had nothing but great things to say about Stefon Diggs, who will be an unrestricted free agent next month.

One of the biggest conversations surrounding the Houston Texans and the future of star wide receiver Stefon Diggs. Heading into the 2024 season, the fans were excited about the Texans’ offense after the team acquired Diggs in a trade from the Buffalo Bills.

After making the playoffs in 2023 with Nico Collins and Tank Dell, the Texans felt like adding a star receiver like Diggs could help take C.J. Stroud and the offense to the next level. However, Houston never got a chance to see this wide receiver core play a full season together as the veteran receiver suffered a torn ACL in Week 8.

Despite only having Diggs on the field for half of the season, the Texans seemingly want him back next season.

On Tuesday, Houston head coach DeMeco Ryans spoke about Diggs’ impact on the field and what he brought to the team at the NFL Scouting Combine.

"We loved having Stef on our team. We'll see how things work out with him, Ryans said (h/t Aaron Wilson of KPRC-2). Stef brought, you talk about energy, talk about leadership, brought a lot to our team. It hurt us down the stretch not having Stef, not having Tank. You need those playmakers at the wide position."

The Texans head coach added that talks are ongoing with the veteran wide receiver, per Will Kunkel of FOX 26 Houston.

If Diggs did not get hurt in Week 8, he was likely on pace to have another 1,000-yard receiving season. Diggs posted 47 receptions (64 targets) for 496 yards and three touchdowns.

The Texans missed Diggs and Dell in the playoffs, especially when they played the Kansas City Chiefs divisional round game. Houston’s offensive line was one of the main storylines from that game, but not having two of your starting wide receivers is not ideal when playing at Arrowhead.

We’ll see if the Texans and Diggs’ representation can get a deal in the coming weeks. Houston has proven that they are the best team in the AFC South, now they need to show that they can play with the AFC heavyweights.
