The Houston Texans shockingly fired offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik after losing to the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round of the playoffs.
After the 2023 season, Slowik was viewed as one of the top head coaching candidates as then-rookie QB C.J. Stroud won Offensive Rookie of the Year. However, Slowik couldn’t recapture that same magic he had with Stroud in 2024.
The Texans’ offense only averaged 21.9 points per game (ranked 19th in the NFL), a small drop-off from what they did in 2023 (22.2 points per game, 13th). It’s not often an offensive coordinator gets fired in their second season after getting a new contract.
Former Texans OC Joins Miami Dolphins' Coaching Staff
That said, the 37-year-old Slowik has landed a new opportunity, hopefully giving him a second chance to become an offensive coordinator again. On Tuesday night, Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network reported Slowik is joining the Miami Dolphins as their senior passing game coordinator.

Still only 37, Slowik was a hot head coaching candidate last year after Houston’s instant success. Now, a reunion with former #49ers coworker Mike McDaniel in Miami. pic.twitter.com/7OvOgWuJvy
This is a good landing spot for the former Texans coordinator to get back on track. Slowik will be reunited with Mike McDaniel, who he worked with in San Francisco.
Slowik won’t be calling the plays in Miami next season, but he’ll play an integral role in getting Dolphins starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa on the right track. This past season, Tagovailoa completed 72.9 percent of his passes (career-high) for 2,867 yards, 19 touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
However, Tagovailoa only played in 11 games, missing the other six due to injury. Nonetheless, if Slowik brings over some things he did with Stroud and it works with Tagovailoa, he’ll get more coordinator opportunities after the 2025 season.
At his age, the sky is still the limit for Slowik. Clearly, he has the coaching talent, despite things not working in 2024 with the Texans. It’s only a matter of time before an OC or HC job comes knocking.
