In the next four days, Houston Astros fans will be refreshing their social media feeds, trying to figure out what’s going to happen at the trade deadline. With the Astros leading the American League West and set to get several players back from injury in the coming weeks, a deal at the trade deadline could push them over the top in a wide-open pennant chase.

But while insiders may be scrambling for the latest bit of Astros news, nothing beats news coming straight from the source.

That’s what happened in the case of one Astros veteran whose wife took the opportunity to announce Houston’s latest roster move on Monday afternoon and potentially preclude a bigger move later in the week.

Astros Designate Jon Singleton For Assignment

The Astros designated infielder Jon Singleton for assignment on Monday afternoon, but there hasn’t been an official announcement as of 2:30 p.m. Central Time. Instead, Singleton’s wife, Linzy, announced her husband's designation on social media, letting the baseball world know that the 33-year-old has become available.

A former consensus top 100 prospect that came to Houston in the Hunter Pence trade with the Philadelphia Phillies, Singleton made his major league debut in 2014 and spent the next three seasons with the Astros organization. But three violations of the league’s substance abuse policy caused his release in 2018 before he resurfaced with the Milwaukee Brewers organization in 2021.

Singleton made his return to the major leagues with the Milwaukee Brewers in 2023 and rejoined Houston on a minor league contract in 2023. While he appeared in 119 games, hitting .234/.321/.386 with 13 homers and 42 RBI last season, he signed a minor league deal with the New York Mets in April before he was released and rejoined the Astros.

This trip to Houston saw Singleton return to the majors when Isaac Paredes was placed on the injured list July 20. But it was short-lived as Singleton had one hit with a strikeout in nine at-bats.

While the decision to DFA Singleton isn’t surprising, it leaves another question ahead of the deadline. Singleton’s release deprives Houston of another left-handed hitter, which is something the team has coveted ahead of Thursday evening. The 33-year-old could also remain in the organization if he clears waivers, but it doesn’t do anything to keep bench options for Joe Espada.

It’s a release that will create headlines for how it was announced, but adds more intrigue over what Houston will do in the coming days.
