The Houston Astros were one of several teams that came away with a haul at last week’s trade deadline. Carlos Correa, Jesús Sánchez and Ramón Urías all figure to play key roles for the Astros down the stretch, but a general manager’s work isn’t done when the deadline passes.
Dana Brown can’t afford to relax as the Astros look to close out their eighth American League West Division title in the past nine seasons, which led to the release of a former All-Star just days after the trade deadline.

Astros Release Former All-Star Catcher 4 Days After MLB Trade Deadline
According to KPRC2’s Ari Alexander, the Houston Astros have released catcher Omar Narvaez from his minor league contract. The former All-Star spent almost two months with Triple-A Sugar Land after signing as a minor league free agent earlier this season and hit .258/.402/.333 with one homer and 11 RBI in 27 games. While Narvaez showed great patience with 20 walks in 117 plate appearances, hit power was non-existent with just five of his 24 hits going for extra bases.
Those numbers are about the norm from Narvaez’s major league career. The 33-year-old has hit .252/.335/.373 over his 10-year career with the Chicago White Sox, Seattle Mariners, Milwaukee Brewers, and New York Mets, but hit a high point during the late 2010s. Narvaez hit .264/.347/.417 with 44 homers and 144 RBI in 392 games during that time frame and made his lone All-Star appearance with the Brewers in 2021.
But after a disappointing 2022 campaign in Milwaukee, Narvaez hit an even lower point after signing a two-year, $15 million contract with the New York Mets prior to the 2023 season. He hit just .192/.254/.259 with two homers and 12 RBI in 77 games before he was released from the contract early in the 2024 season and spent four games with the White Sox before being designated for assignment last April.
The Astros picked up Narvaez for depth at catcher shortly after, but they’ve rolled with Yanier Diaz, Victor Caratini, and Cesar Salazar for most of the season. With Salazar being demoted back to Triple-A, Narvaez became expendable and will look to latch on with his third team of the season.
