The Houston Astros claimed the best record in the American League this week, but they’ll have a lot of work to do if they want to compete for a title. Injuries to key players such as Jeremy Peña and Yordan Alvarez, but the fact that Houston is even in this position is a testament to the players who have stepped up in the absence of 18 players on the injured list.

With so many players on the shelf, the Astros have had to get creative to fill their roles. And it’s led them to add a former first-round pick in an attempt to add some depth for the stretch run.

Astros Claim Former 1st-Round Pick Logan Davidson

The Athletics announced on Friday that Logan Davidson has been claimed off waivers by the Astros. The 29th overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft, Davidson was designated for assignment by the Athletics last week and will now join the Astros as a bench piece.

Davidson spent six seasons with the Athletics’ organization but finally made his major league debut after hitting .263/.412/.397 with seven homers, 40 RBIs, and seven stolen bases on eight attempts at Triple-A Las Vegas. While Davidson waited a while to make his MLB debut, his time with the team that drafted him was short as he went 3-for-20 at the plate with a pair of RBI, three walks, and 12 strikeouts in nine games.

Still, he's relatively young (27) and a change of scenery could see him turn things around in a new organization.

While Davidson was immediately optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land, his presence could provide a boost to the Astros’ outfield situation. Like many positions on the team, the Astros are short on depth with Jake Myers on the injured list. Houston would also like to acquire a left-handed second baseman at the trade deadline to keep Jose Altuve in left field, but with so many injuries this season, adding anyone in case of emergency would be a good idea.

The Astros currently own a five-game lead over the Seattle Mariners in the division and will look to add more pieces as the deadline approaches on July 31.
