Houston Texans: Brutal schedule means a rough season

Texans fans, the NFL Schedule Gods have released the 2020 edition and the team has been handed a brutal slate. Can they overcome it? Probably not.

With the NFL draft, free agency (for the most part) behind us, and Houston Texans’ schedules released it’s time to break out my crystal ball and start prognosticating. After careful review of the Houston Texan’s schedule and consultation with Nostradamus and Edgar Cayce, I’ve come to the conclusion that the Houston Texans are heading for a brutal 5-11 record.

Week one is going to be a shellacking at the hands of the NFL champion Kansas City Chiefs. It’s never a good time to face Pat Mahomes and company, but after spending an offseason decimating his own offense I don’t see Bill O’Brien has the wherewithal to compete in this game.

Next, come back to back losses to the Steelers and Ravens. Baltimore was a great team that had an excellent offseason and is primed for another super bowl run. The Steelers are giving Big Ben one more chance to finish out his career on top and probably still have enough in the tank to be a contender. 0-3 is a strong possibility at this point.

Minnesota is another team that shuffled their roster but is still a top contender. Chalk up another L and Houston will be sitting at 0-4 and calls for Bill O’Brien’s firing should begin in earnest. The following week brings in Minshew Mania, which should provide a temporary respite as the Texans will pick up their first win of the season.

Unfortunately, that success will be shortlived as the Titans and Packers will hand the Texans back

to back losses. Tennessee is going to pick up where they left off after last year’s surprising run, and Houston will have no answers for Aaron Rodgers and Green Bay’s offense. Thankfully Jacksonville awaits again.

After taking their second W from Jacksonville the Texans will be sitting at 2-6 halfway through the season. I think now that Cleveland has an actual head coach they’re going to rebound and have enough firepower to take down Watson and Co., but the Texans always seem to play New England tough and should manage a split of these next two games.

Detroit should be a victory and bring Houston up to 4-7 and provide the team’s lone winning streak of the season. Unfortunately, the much improved Colts will be taking two of the next three along with a loss to Chicago and it’s superior defense dropping them back down to 4-10.

I see a split in their final two games with a win over the hapless Bengals and a loss to the Titans. If Tennessee has nothing to play for in week 17 then maybe Houston inches up to 6-10, but I see a brutal 5-11 season and the end of the O’Brien regime. The mediocrity of their division has pumped of the Texans record over the last few seasons, but with Indy and Tennessee on the upswing, there will be no masking their shortcomings this year.
