Factor #4: Non-alignment with Bob McNair’s vision

The late Bob McNair, the founder of the Texans, worked so diligently not only to bring an NFL franchise to Houston but also to build the team’s brand equity and intangible goodwill. McNair’s desire to develop a positive brand and service-oriented image for the expansion Texans’ franchise was second to none. In 2009, the McNairs donated easily at least a million dollars in an effort to open a YMCA in an underserved community in Houston, the first YMCA to be named after a professional sports team. That is Houston.

Furthermore, the McNairs have generously funded more than $500 million for a variety of causes, including educational initiatives, lodging centers for cancer patients, housing for low-income families, and serve as adamant supporters of fighting hunger in the community, especially through massive philanthropic contributions assisting the impoverished. And that is Houston.

To some degree, quite a few feel that O’Brien’s tirade arguably tarnished the McNair’s hard work in branding who the Houston Texans are and what they stand for. If anything, O’Brien should be appreciative that someone paid for that lower-level seat in the first place, affording the head coach an opportunity to even have a dream job in football.

A football coach, no matter what level of play, holds a certain role in American society as a community leader. I am not sure I could ever rally behind a man that cussed out and screamed at someone else that he allegedly didn’t even bother getting to know before judging and verbally attacking.
