Houston Cougars: Determining Keenum’s future and a Redskins proposal
By Paul Conlon
Keenum’s NFL future
As a full disclaimer, D.C. is one of my favorite places. Since being a small boy, I garnered such powerful memories—from the bitter cold to the humid summers. I remember the upbeat sound of fusion jazz in the restaurants, and the downtrodden saxophones wailing in pain on the street corners. In D.C., much like New York City, there is something beautiful about the symphony of taxi horns reverberating off of high-rises on cold winter days.
As a child, I remember the somber silence of Arlington National Cemetery, countless rows of headstones, and a sense of indebtedness brewing within me to be thankful for the world others sacrificed for me to enjoy living in. I vividly remember learning who RFK was by accidentally reading his headstone and immediately asking my father, who guided me to visit JFK’s grave. As the years went on, each return trip proved rewarding—walks through the National Mall, family marriages, all the way to nightlife in Chinatown.
But there is another reason I want D.C. to succeed. I have been inclined toward supporting Washington’s football success this past season. For, you see, I am what’s called a Keenum Truther—an admission that immediately admonishes my credibility to write about football in many circles. Simply put, I am invested in former Houston Cougars’ quarterback Keenum’s professional success, and Washington’s 3 and 13 record—as well as Keenum’s uncertain future as an NFL quarterback—stings for me, all the way down home in Texas.
