Houston Rockets: 10 emerging stats from the Harden-Westbrook venture
By Paul Conlon
The Houston Rockets have just finished one-third of their 82-game season. Read on to see how a Harden and Westbrook squad ranks in 10 major NBA categories.
Over the last six months, the Houston Rockets have weathered an eventful off-season. Following even more heartbreak at the hands of the Golden State Warriors, the franchise unloaded Chris Paul’s contract in a colossal deal to acquire the services of 2017 NBA MVP, Russell Westbrook. Since the trade, much discussion has transpired concerning how the new-look Houston Rockets would function together as a unit.
However, this week marks the Houston Rockets completing exactly one-third of their 82-game regular-season schedule. So, how do the 2019-20 Houston Rockets compare to the rest of the league in major offensive and defensive categories? Let’s take a look at how a James Harden-Russell Westbrook-led Houston Rockets’ lineup fares in 10 major areas.
Let’s get started regarding what counts the most:
1. Points per game, NBA rank: 2nd
If you had to guess right now, how prolific is the Houston Rockets‘ offense—top ten, top five? The Houston Rockets currently rank second in the NBA, averaging 119.7 points per game.
Interestingly, would you believe that all 30 teams in the Association currently average over 100 points per game in this era of basketball? It’s true. In the last place of this category, the seven-win New York Knicks average slightly over 102 points per contest.
Also of note, the Rockets have set the high-water mark for points scored so far this season throughout the NBA with 159 against Washington—although, Washington scored 158 against the Rockets’ defense in that same contest.
2. Team rebounds, NBA rank: 4th
Clint Capela has made his presence felt with dominant rebounding efforts in tight games. But, how do the Rockets fare in rebounds per game as a team?
The Rockets currently sit in fourth place in rebounds, averaging 48 per game. Giannis Antetokounmpo’s Milwaukee Bucks lead the pack as the only team currently averaging over 50 rebounds per contest.
Did you know that the Brooklyn Nets are currently third in the NBA in rebounds per game? Just imagine what a healthy Kevin Durant could do to make Brooklyn a “beast in the East” playoff contender next season.
