The Houston Texans could always use additional talent under center and the team should send a rep to attend Colin Kaepernick’s workout. Why? Let’s dig in.

The Houston Texans are charging out of the bye week with a 6-3 record, a mark that I didn’t know was possible to hit at the start of the season, considering the competition and the number of talented quarterbacks that they’d be facing.

But the Houston Texans continue to buck trends and find ways to win with the talent that they have on the field.  This starts with quarterback Deshaun Watson, who is continuously thirsty to make plays to help this team win ballgames.

It’s infectious and it motivates the other members of the team to aim even higher to reach their potential.  The hits that he’s taken, including injuries to his ribs as well as his eye, while he keeps on playing, goes to show his passion for the game accompanied by a spirit that cannot and will not be extinguished.

With struggles from the rest of the teams in the AFC South, it’s honestly the Houston Texans‘ division title to lose, especially if they keep up their impressive play beyond the bye week.

But although this team is loaded with talent with a few holes that are usually covered well in games, an interesting prospect is now available for the Houston Texans to feast on.

After nearly going three seasons without taking part in an NFL-down, Colin Kaepernick will have an opportunity to workout in front of representatives of reportedly 25 NFL teams.  Although things have been quite mum on which teams will have reps in place, it’s highly likely that the Houston Texans haven’t sent any reps over to Atlanta to see him partake in a workout that will be similar to the nuances of a combine.

The workout will take place at the Falcons’ practice facility and will commence at 2 p.m. CST.

Here’s a timeline of today’s events per NFL Insider Ian Rapoport (all times EST) :

Why is this workout is happening?

But let’s get back to the reasoning why such a heavily-promoted workout for one man has happened in the first place.

Regardless, Kaepernick stood up for what he believed in which is racial injustice — to which what I happen to agree with — and regardless of the venue of where he communicated his concerns with a kneel to the national anthem, he has a right to express those feelings.  If he wants to continue to kneel before the start of games, then let it be.

I honestly feel that he’s not disrespecting the presentation of the colors but rather communicating his point yet showing respect for the United States by kneeling for those who lost their lives for Old Glory.

The ultimate contempt of Francis Scott Key’s 52-second, 80-word stanza would be him not being on the field in the first place to acknowledge so there’s that.

This guy is too talented to let his professional football career to fall by the wayside and with him being 32-years-old, there’s not too much time left for him to showcase his talents.

Nonetheless, his age is not an inhibitor but rather an enabler to be his best self out there.  He has been working tremendously hard to stay in shape so that whenever the call was made for his services, he’d be ready.

As of today, that call has been made and it’ll be up to him to prove his worth to the 25 teams that will be in attendance.

The Reality

Now to be clear, this is Watson’s team and there’s no ifs, ands or buts about it but Kaepernick would be a terrific backup to Watson and this offense would see complete continuity if he had to take over for Watson in his stead.  Not to mention he could be appearing in games if Tim Kelly and Bill O’Brien decide to run some trick plays.

A.J. McCarron isn’t dynamic like Watson but he’d likely be able to win you a few games if called up.  I’d be totally for cutting McCarron but the Houston Texans would be on the hook for about $656K which is the prorated remainder for the final seven weeks of the season off his one-year, $3 million deal that included a $1.5M signing bonus.  The team has plenty of cap space around the neighborhood of about $30 million or so I think they’ll be just fine.

I would just like have him here under contract just in case they needed him and it would send a message that the Houston Texans would be looking at the talent of the player, not necessarily if their values are a fit with the player that they’re signing.

By the way, wide receiver Kenny Stills has been plenty vocal on social concerns and he hasn’t missed a beat in helping this team win games.

Potential landing spots

But ultimately, I think Kaepernick wants to be starter and that’s just not going to happen here in

More from House of Houston

Houston unless there’s an emergency situation.  There are other teams that need a proven starting quarterback and the Miami Dolphins and Cincinnati Bengals are the first two teams that come to mind that have an opening that he’d fill immediately.

The Los Angeles Chargers will be looking for a quarterback soon but I don’t think they’d have the guts to ruffle the feathers of long-time signal-caller Phillip Rivers, even though his struggles have continued throughout the season.

You can say the Pittsburgh Steelers could be looking too but with Ben Roethlisberger having no plans to retire, I’m positive that he’d set his own team on fire as well as leave tire marks all over them if they were to sign Kaepernick.  And besides, they’ve made a notable investment in Mason Rudolph so they believe in him.

The Carolina Panthers situation is even more intriguing as it’s unclear if they plan to move on from Cam Newton and if they have enough faith in Kyle Allen, who hasn’t been too shabby as of late stepping in for his injured counterpart, to warrant a signing of Kaep.

Allen was able to successfully steer the Panthers to beat the Houston Texans earlier this season.  But if the Panthers were looking to try to win now, Kaep would be the immediate answer and I think Cam would welcome him with open arms.

It’ll be interesting to see where Kaep ends up but this man deserves another shot and he sure as hell is going to get it.
