Houston Astros: Three reasons why a decade of 100’s was worth it
With last night’s win over the Rangers, the Houston Astros made history with the number 100. Here are three reasons why a decade of 100’s was worth it.
The Houston Astros made history when they became the first team in MLB ever to win and lose 100 games for three straight seasons in a decade. For Houston Astros fans up to this moment, the decade has been one of suffering, hoping, heartbreaking, and rewarding.
Let me ask y’all a question. What were you like in 2010? I don’t mean what you were like as a person because I’m sure all of y’all were going through the grit and grinds of life back then. But I’m referring to as a Houston Astros fan. Maybe you were realizing the Houston Astros were about to go down the chain and figured you just didn’t know how to support the team when the reality of losing was about to start. Maybe you were seeing a shift in momentum as some fans decided to jump on board the Rangers and root for them during the World Series in 2010 and 2011. Maybe you stayed with the team even though you knew they would struggle.
For me, a graduating high-schooler turn college freshman at the time, I knew the Houston Astros were not going to be in contention for a few years. But what other choice did I have in rooting for teams? I wouldn’t be able to go to many of their games because I was in college then. But, I didn’t want to betray my team and not join the enemy. So even while I dealt with Ranger hysteria, I stayed true to my roots and in the end, it would be worth it.
But as far as we’re concerned, this decade was historic in both good and bad. Never in the history of the game has their been a team to lose 100 games a season for three straight years and win 100 games a season for three straight years to do so in a decade.
That’s six years of hard work, dedications, struggle, and rewarding all in a single ten-year span. The Yankees never accomplished the feat. The Red Sox never accomplished the feat. The Dodgers, Giants, Cardinals, Cubs, Indians, and the rest of baseball could say they never had to accomplish the same feat in a decade because they were either winning 100 games or losing fewer than 100.
But the Houston Astros? This team continues to make history. Check that. This team continues to “EARN” history even as we strive for another championship.
To put it into the context of what we achieved, we must look into the history of the teams that made the accomplishment and also the journey to this point.
