Houston Rockets: 3 thriving things about Tyson Chandler that help team
Thing #1: Defensive Prowess
Chandler is still as best as they come when it comes to being able to defend his assignments. With the Houston Rockets‘ system of being able to switch quickly from one guy to another, he is still light on his feet enough to be able to do it successfully. This is one of the many reasons as to why things didn’t work out too well for guys like Carmelo Anthony and Kenneth Faried. But even at age 36, Chandler can still bang with the best.
He’ll also be able to move deftly with the pick-and-roll plays and his strong, 7-foot-1, 220-pound frame will be able to stand up to assignments as high as the Great Wall. There will be nothing much that will get past him.
Can you believe his defensive rating per 100 possessions is the lowest as it has been over the past two seasons? At 108, it’s definitely down from the 110 he posted in 2017-18, demonstrating that he still has a bit left in the tank.
If you would’ve put Chandler on last season’s team, he would’ve been tied with Clint Capela and James Harden for the best defensive rating among all of the Houston Rockets. Both Capela and Harden registered a 108 last season so to say that Chandler can’t keep up this up for another season — or even better — is an understatement. Plus, newly-hired top assistant Elston Turner will be working with him to ensure that he reaches his highest potential.
