Houston Astros: Yordan Alvarez is making history with the long ball

Houston Astros outfielder Yordan Alvarez, a rookie, has been sensational since being called up two weeks ago. He’s making history too. What’s going on?

There’s a lot to be said about the Houston Astros as of late. Whether they’ve been mired in injury issues, the losing streak, the mysterious funk that they’ve been in. But there’s no question that people don’t doubt the talent as well as the tremendous depth that this team has on deck.

It’s actually quite refreshing to see this in front of my eyes as the Houston Astros haven’t disappointed in ensuring that some type of storyline piques my interest.

It’s June and this is the time that the rookies are usually called up to help increase their exposure and help solve short-term problems such as injuries. It allows them to be showcased ahead of the trade deadline about a month later, allowing teams to get a glimpse of what they could be making a package for.

That might be the case this time around as the team still needs to deal for a dominant reliever to shore up this bullpen even more. I wrote recently about how the San Francisco Giants’ Tony Watson being a good fit to bring into the fold. He’s still pitching a gem out in the Bay Area, so it would be great to see him here in the Bayou City.

But we’ve still got a long way to go and who knows what may become available before the trade deadline approaches July 31.

amazing and it’s exciting to see this guy step up to the plate with each at-bat.

So what did Alvarez do this time around?

As of last night, Alvarez became the 4th player in the modern era of baseball — since 1900 — to hit six or more home runs within their first 11 games of their career. Alvarez follows Trevor Story (7), Carlos Delgado (6) and Dino Restelli (6) as guys who were able to complete such a feat.

Wow. I can’t begin to fathom how much a fixture this guy will be with this team for likely years to come. It’s early — but it looks like he’s on track to be a fine player in this league.

Alvarez hit another homer in today’s game, making that seven home runs in 12 games so it goes to show the momentum from his call-up has no signs of slowing down soon. And who in their right mind would want it to, especially if you’re of fan of not only him but of this team?

Yordan has been a gem to watch and that’s the bottom line. I can’t wait to see what he’s going to do next as well. We’ll see!

Alvarez, 21, is slashing .333/.429/.813 with a 1.241 OPS along with 16 RBIs through 48 at-bats.
