With their final selection of the 2019 NFL draft at pick number 220 overall, the Houston Texans will target an intriguing defensive prospect to bolster both their pass rushing arsenal and their depth at linebacker with Malik Reed out of Nevada.

More from House of Houston

Reed primarily played defensive end for Nevada early in his career but for his senior year, he switched to more of a hybrid role that looked more like a 3-4 outside linebacker with both pass rushing duties and some coverage duties.

Reed is too undersized to primarily be used as a designated pass rusher in the NFL, only standing at 6’1″ and weighing 235 pounds. Fortunately, his transition to OLB at Nevada went very well and he displayed some promise at the position to where he can utilize his speed and athleticism in both rushing the passer and dropping back into coverage.

He was a very productive player in college, collecting 38.5 tackles for loss, 22 sacks, and 11 forced fumbles. He has a great motor and never gives up on a play which will make him a great special teams player early and a solid contributor on defense down the road.

Not getting an offensive tackle in the first round is the opposite of ideal for the Houston Texans but it as an unfortunate and potentially likely scenario in two weeks but if they can come away with a haul like this, they’ll make the best of the situation.
