Banking on Brock Osweiler to be the franchise QB

After a year or so of decline, the Houston Texans finally separated themselves from Schaub as their franchise quarterback in 2013. They spent the next couple of seasons switching from QB to QB until the 2016 offseason when they decided to go for it.

That offseason, the Texans inked Brock Osweiler, a one year starter for the Broncos, to a lucrative four year, $72 million contract. This was one of the biggest deals ever given to a free agent quarterback and it was even more shocking that it was for a guy that had very limited experience though he had some success that one year.

Osweiler’s abbreviated success came when Peyton Manning was hurt and Osweiler helped steady the ship until the playoffs when Manning would eventually take back over and win one final Super Bowl before calling it a career.

Osweiler was supposed to be the Houston Texans‘ savior, the final answer at the quarterback position after Schaub. He started 14 of 15 games in his first year as a Texan and ineffective doesn’t even begin to describe his play. He was abysmal and somehow made the team worse off at quarterback.

The Texans cut bait after that one, ill-fated season and did the NFL’s version of a salary dump by packing Osweiler with a second round pick to the Browns for a conditional late round pick. Fortunately, they were able to get out of the deal after one year and replaced him with Deshaun Watson a month or so later in the draft. Even still, I wish this were an April Fools joke that would wipe this contract off the team’s record forever.
