Houston Texans Rumors: Five second tier free agents to target
By T.A. Mock
It’s obvious that the Houston Texans knew that their secondary was an issue heading into the offseason. It was probably their second biggest hole but they let Mathieu and Jackson walk. Gipson, Roby, and Boddy-Calhoun help rebuild this struggling unit but the team likely isn’t done adding to it.
The Texans have four picks in the first three rounds of the draft, including back-to-back picks in the second round. Now, some of those picks will likely be used for help along the offensive line and protecting Watson. However, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume the team would add a secondary player with one of those selections.
However, they could still look to the free agent market to bolster the position unit. If they do, they should once again turn their eyes to the safety position. This time, the should look for a reunion with one of their former players, Glover Quin.
Quin left for more money and greener pastures after the 2012 season, his fourth with the Texans. He spent the next six years patrolling Detroit’s secondary and doing an excellent job at that. He’s also been incredibly reliable on top of that, starting every single game he was in Detriot, a perfect 96 out of 96.
Currently, the Houston Texans have Justin Reid and Gipson to start with Andre Hal backing them up. The team could potentially sign Quin to come in and provide depth and versatility in the secondary and more veteran mentorship for the young guys.
Quin would have to settle for a reduced role after falling out of favor with the new regime in Detriot but coming back to where his career started could be a great fit that he may be able to parlay into one more deal. Quin would be a terrific addition that could turn this former weakness into a potential strength.
