Houston Texans Rumors: Five second tier free agents to target
By T.A. Mock
The Houston Texans don’t necessarily need help along the defensive line so, this would be a luxury add. Currently, J.J. Watt, Jadeveon Clowney, and D.J. Reader man the line with Angelo Blackson, Joel Heath, Brandon Dunn, and Carlos Watkins rotating in behind them.
It’s already a deep position and a strength on the team, however, it could become an elite unit and one of the best in the league if they used a little bit of their cap space on a one-year deal with a player like Muhammad Wilkerson who is capable of near-elite play.
Wilkerson become a locker room cancer and an unpleasant presence when he was with the New York Jets. So much so that he was suspended for showing up late to a meeting. He was not living up to his megadeal and so the Jets cut him last offseason.
He signed a cheap, one-year prove it deal with Packers and it was going pretty well prior to a week three injury that sidelined him for the remainder of the 2018 season. Wilkerson has become a big name that hasn’t been able to provide a big impact but, he could still be very valuable on a contender.
The Rams made a similar move last offseason when they signed Ndamukong Suh to a one-year deal to bolster their defense. Suh wasn’t the dominant presence he’s been over the past decade but he was good enough. He helped them ultimately reach the Super Bowl with a very strong performance in the playoffs.
The Houston Texans have enough strong locker room presences to overcome any problems with Wilkerson. Wilkerson needs to reestablish value in an attempt to cash in one more time and with the playmakers on the Texans defense, it will be easy to do. This could be a low-cost move with major upside.
