The Houston Texans made some moves early in free agency but it’s been radio silence since then. Here are five guys they should target in the second tier of free agency.

The Houston Texans have had a relatively busy offseason thus far. Maybe not quite as busy with big names like many hoped they would be coming into the offseason but, they’ve been busy nonetheless.

The Texans lost two key defenders in free agency in Tyrann Mathieu and Kareem Jackson. The team wanted Mathieu back because he was a revelation in the secondary on a one-year, prove it deal but he opted for more money from the Chiefs. They didn’t try to re-sign Jackson who decided to sign with the Broncos.

These moves were devastating, no doubt. However, the team was able to make some moves to mitigate the losses of Mathieu and Jackson. First, the Tashaun Gipson was inked to a three-year deal at about half of what Mathieu cost. Then, Bradley Roby and Briean Boddy-Calhoun were added to bolster the cornerback position.

The Houston Texans have made a couple of other moves ensuring depth behind Deshaun Watson at quarterback. First, they signed A.J. McCarron to become Watson’s primary backup and then Joe Webb was re-signed to be the third quarterback and special teams ace. Darren Fells was also signed to bolster blocking at the tight end position.

Still, none of these guys are big names and more importantly, none of them play offensive line which is the Texans‘ most glaring weakness. Even though the biggest names are off of the market, there are still contributors out there for the offensive line and elsewhere. So, let’s take a look at five second-tier free agents the team should target.
