The Houston Texans made some moves early in free agency but it’s been radio silence since then. Here are five guys they should target in the second tier of free agency.
TheHouston Texanshave had a relatively busy offseason thus far. Maybe not quite as busy with big names like many hoped they would be coming into the offseason but, they’ve been busy nonetheless.
TheTexanslost two key defenders in free agency inTyrann MathieuandKareem Jackson. The team wanted Mathieu back because he was a revelation in the secondary on a one-year, prove it deal but he opted for more money from the Chiefs. They didn’t try to re-sign Jackson who decided to sign with the Broncos.
These moves were devastating, no doubt. However, the team was able to make some moves to mitigate the losses of Mathieu and Jackson. First, theTashaun Gipsonwas inked to a three-year deal at about half of what Mathieu cost. Then,Bradley Robyand Briean Boddy-Calhoun were added to bolster the cornerback position.
TheHouston Texanshave made a couple of other moves ensuring depth behindDeshaun Watsonat quarterback. First, they signedA.J. McCarronto become Watson’s primary backup and thenJoe Webbwas re-signed to be the third quarterback and special teams ace.Darren Fellswas also signed to bolster blocking at the tight end position.
Still, none of these guys are big names and more importantly, none of them play offensive line which is theTexans‘ most glaring weakness. Even though the biggest names are off of the market, there are still contributors out there for the offensive line and elsewhere. So, let’s take a look at five second-tier free agents the team should target.
