Houston Texans: Team’s interest in CB Greedy Williams signals new era
The Houston Texans reportedly have interest in LSU CB Greedy Williams, who’s expected to be an early-round pick the draft. What gives? Let’s look.
The Houston Texans are about a month and a half away from the NFL Draft and for the first time in awhile, we will not be imploring the team to hunt for a quarterback. Deshaun Watson has shown consistent improvement season-by-season and he certainly exudes the character of being a franchise quarterback.
The Houston Texans will definitely need to fulfill other needs at weak positions this draft and the top of the list should be: offensive tackle, cornerback, an edge rusher and possibly another safety. I’m positive they’ll find a linebacker that they want to develop as well. But what will excite me the most is if they actually make a marked investment in both the offensive tackle and cornerback positions.
The latest report from the Chron’s Aaron Wilson certainly indicates the Houston Texans are being bullish about investing in a cornerback by targeting standout LSU CB Greedy Williams in this season’s draft.
Kevin Johnson was to be the Houston Texans cornerstone at the position but he’s been mired in nothing but under-performance and a plethora of injuries to boot. He still wants to continue his career despite the multitude of concussions.
NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reported recently that the Houston Texans are shopping Johnson around in a possible trade but no results have been yielded just yet. I’m optimistic that the team could wean a 5th-rounder because of some slight upside the guy has but it’s probably going to be pick in the later rounds if a team agrees to take him off the team’s hands.
Johnson’s 5th-year option was picked up and he’d be due $9.1 million in 2019, something the Houston Texans aren’t graciously looking forward to picking up the tab on and wouldn’t be a prudent move to begin with.
But this is the most aggressive they’ve been with the CB position since well, Kevin Johnson, who was a first-round pick back in the 2015 Draft. It signals that a new era will be starting with the Houston Texans in the secondary, which is definitely a unit that could’ve been a lot better last season.
It’s expected that the Houston Texans will make a notable overhaul of that unit in response to their lackluster performance last season and going out with the old and bringing in the new is certainly what they’re looking to do.
Any way, Williams is one of the top CB’s that will be available in this draft and he’ll make an immediate impact if the Houston Texans were to take him early.
The 6-foot-2, 175-pound CB that has the natural skills to disrupt passes targeted his way either

by way of batting passes that were sent his way. Williams’ weight would be of concern to me because he may not be able ball-hawk over the stronger, faster and elite wide receivers of the NFL.
Despite all of that, some team will draft him early and it might as well be the Houston Texans.
But you don’t have to take my word for it, here’s what the experts are saying about him:
"“Long, athletic cornerback who is more smooth and fluid than twitchy and sudden in his coverage. Williams has the instincts and tools to play a variety of coverages, but his length and pattern-matching talent will likely get him drafted to handle press-man duties. His ball production dropped a little from 2017 and he continued to struggle with finding the ball downfield, but he is rarely ever out of position. He needs to get stronger and more competitive in run support, but he has the talent and traits to become a CB1.”"
Charlie Campbell of WalterFootball.com:
"“In 2018, Williams had two interceptions, 32 tackles and nine passes broken up. He played well against Ole Miss and its trio of future NFL receivers. Florida threw away from Williams all game, but he struggled against Georgia and Alabama. Versus the Crimson Tide, Williams gave up a few first-down receptions, a touchdown, and a longer completion to Jerry Jeudy. Multiple team sources say they feel that Williams is overrated. Some think he is a nice player who lacks elite speed, and thus is not a high first-round talent. There are also are some concerns about his character and makeup.”"
The consensus of these two talented gentlemen is that he’s ready to be a starter and he has the length, speed and talent to succeed with a just a few blemishes on his resume.
None of this should hinder the Houston Texans to draft him and I’d welcome the addition. There are many talented CBs in the draft but the news of the team talking with Williams opened my eyes the most.
Let’s keep an eye on this!
