Houston Texans Rumors: 5 players to target in free agency this offseason
By T.A. Mock
Bryce Callahan, CB, Chicago Bears
Last offseason, the Houston Texans signed Aaron Colvin to a big money contract worth $34 million over 4 years. Colvin spent a lot of time in Jacksonville as a slot corner but he has the size and skill to bump outside.
With the Texans needing secondary help, the could attempt to rely on Colvin outside and bring in an external option to man the slot. Fortunately for the Texans, one of the best slot corners in all of football is hitting the market this offseason and he just so happened to play high school football for Cy Woods High School in a Houston suburb and play collegiate ball for Rice.
That man is Bryce Callahan. Callahan is a smaller guy, standing at 5’9″ and weighing around 190 lbs. However, he is a tenacious player that is superb in coverage and is willing to take on ball carriers.
Callahan took on bigger roles with the Bears the past two seasons and he didn’t disappoint. He would be a phenomenal addition to this secondary and should be able be had a very reasonable price while still getting a solid pay raise. Somewhere in the range of $5 – $7 million for 3 – 4 years.
Another option: Darqueze Dennard, CB, Cincinnati Bengals
Darqueze Dennard is a former first round pick that hasn’t quite panned out for the Bengals. He played sparingly for his first three years in the league before garnering more playing time his final two years. As his role increased, he didn’t disappoint.
The Houston Texans could target Dennard to provide solid depth some upside potential either in the slot or on the outside. He has good size and is a good athlete as well. He doesn’t have the best ball skills but that isn’t a must for the price Dennard could be had at.
