Houston Texans Rumors: Complete seven-round Mock Draft 1.0
By T.A. Mock
Keeping with the theme of addressing the most glaring weaknesses on the roster, the Houston Texans turn their attention, once again, to the secondary. I believe the team will do everything they can to re-sign Tyrann Mathieu to keep him with Andre Hal and Justin Reid so, they’ll dip back into the cornerback pool.
Kris Boyd has a ton of experience and I mean a ton. He’s played in 45 games in college at Texas University and he started 32 of those games. So, that in and of itself is a major plus in targeting him this late in the draft. He’s by no means a perfect prospect, as evidenced by the fact that he is available in the fifth round but, he is a great value at this point.
Boyd doesn’t have terrific speed so he struggles in man coverage and can get beat by burners. So, he is much better in a zone scheme where he can have some help. The Texans run more zone than they do man so this shouldn’t be a problem.
Boyd is extremely physical which can bite him occasionally in pass coverage but it aids him tremendously in run support. He is an impressive tackler and is always near the ball at the end of the play. Boyd will have to earn his role through strong special teams play but he could be a solid reserve early on with spot start potential. Can’t ask much more from a fifth round pick.
