The Houston Astros acquired another free agent in starting pitcher Wade Miley. Let’s take a look at three things he brings to the team and starting rotation.

After the previous additions of Michael Brantley, Aledmys Diaz, and Robinson Chirinos focused on solidifying the team’s defense and lineup, the Houston Astros have finally turned to their pitching staff with the addition of Wade Miley.

It was long speculated when the Astros would add pitching help this offseason. Charlie Morton has been with the Rays for a couple of months. Dallas Keuchel is still looking for a new team. Lance McCullers will miss the entire 2019 season with Tommy John surgery.

Losing those three guys opened up a 500 inning void in the Astros rotation behind Justin Verlander and Gerrit Cole. Verlander and Cole will help any rotation be great but there was an obvious need of stronger, more experienced arms behind them.

The Houston Astros helped fill that void with the addition of Miley on Thursday. Miley is a wily vet who has seen some nice peaks and some serious valleys throughout his eight-year big league career. 2018 was one of his better seasons and he was hoping for a multi-year deal.

However, that wasn’t happening for him and he opted to sign a one-year deal with the Houston Astros worth $4.5 million plus potentially $500,000 more based off of incentives. Signing Miley isn’t a flashy move but it is a very solid one so, let’s take a look at three things Miley brings to the team.
