Reason #2: The unique opportunity the Texans have

In the Houston Texans case, Whitney Mercilus might be the odd man out here.  He could be an excellent addition for another team as he will try to have a bounce back year in 2019. Then again, it wasn’t Whitney’s fault this past season, it was more of him trying to fit in a defensive scheme that encompassed a healthy J.J. Watt and Jadeveon Clowney.

Clowney is a peculiar conundrum as he’s one of hottest names on the free agency market this off season.  He’ll either be handed the franchise tag or be offered a long-term, multi-million dollar deal.  For the Houston Texans to follow through with what I’ve proposed, they’ll need to franchise him but that could come with repercussions with his desire not to play because of his affinity for a long-term deal.

Now back to the free agents, I’m not saying that the Houston Texans should give up valuable early-round picks as the draft could bring them a dynamic cornerback and a game-changing left tackle.  What I’m implying is that if the talent isn’t there where one is drafting, go get someone who is a proven commodity in this league.

Because of injuries, there is no chance Kevin Johnson ever suits up in a Houston Texans uniform again.  It’s also apparent that Kareem Jackson and Johnathan Joseph showed their age numerous times this past season. Although Jackson had one of the most productive seasons of his career, it’s still apparent that he can’t effectively cover the speedier wide receivers.  Nonetheless, although they’re aging, Jackson and Joseph are still solid contributors to the secondary.

If one wants to go to a Super Bowl, you can’t rely on Kayvon Webster, Shareece Wright and Aaron Colvin to stay healthy.

Colvin was supposed to be an exciting signing; however, the book is still out on him since he was injured for most of the season. There were times where he looked quite solid out on the field but he also had flashes of being horrid.
