David Sills V, WR, West Virginia

Just what the Houston Texans need, right? Another failed quarterback trying to make it at wide receiver. It worked out so well with Braxton Miller, they should definitely do it again. Now, of course, I’m being facetious because Miller absolutely did not work out and was another failed mid-round draft pick.

However, David Sills V has an exponentially higher chance to pan out in the NFL than Miller did. Miller was extremely athletic but only played one year at receiver and didn’t produce all that much. Sills, on the other hand, has had two highly productive years at wide receiver in college and is much more polished heading into the pros.

Sills, in his final two years at West Virginia, converted to receive and grabbed 125 passes for 1,966 yards and 32 touchdowns. Miller only caught 25 passes for 340 yards and 3 touchdowns, he actually had more rushing attempts than receptions with 43. So, any concerns you have about another failed QB because of Miller should not be applied to Sills.

Sills also has terrific size, standing a 6’4″ and weighing in well over 200 lbs. He has very good leaping ability and is particularly adept at high-pointing the ball, both of which make him a tremendous red zone target. With Demaryius Thomas likely to get cut because of his contract and Achilles injury, the Houston Texans need another possession receiver to help out Deshaun Watson and to take pressure of DeAndre Hopkins.

Sills can do that, he doesn’t have top end speed but he can help out in other ways especially working alongside Hopkins with Watson throwing him the ball. Sills lack of pure athletic traits may push him down boards but he showed in the Senior Bowl he can be of value in the NFL and he could be a steal in the mid-rounds.
