Houston Texans Rumors: 5 Senior Bowl prospects to consider drafting
By T.A. Mock
Daylon Mack, DT, Texas A&M
Daylon Mack has had an interesting path to the NFL. He was one of the most highly touted recruits in his class out of high school. A five star with oodles of potential and athleticism to spare. If you look up highlights of him from high school, you’ll see him running the ball the length of the football field as a 300+ pound running back who also dabbled along the defensive line.
He went to Texas A&M where he struggled to find a true spot in the rotation and solid role. He would flash once or twice a game but then would disappear the rest of it, often on the bench. He was in Kevin Sumlin and John Chavis’ dog house a lot of that time as well.
He seemed to have, what many described as the five-star curse. You’re so talented and so highly regarded as a high school player to where you don’t have to try and you can still dominate so you never develop a work ethic that allows you to build on your greatness.
However, when the regime changed at A&M and Jimbo Fisher and Mike Elko took over, Mack was able to find a spot in the rotation. He flashed more often and disappeared less but still never lived up to that five-star potential. Regardless, his play earned him an invite to the East-West Shrine Game and he balled out there and earned himself an invite to the Senior Bowl.
He showcased his talent and athleticism once again and popped off during practice and the game. He definitely improved his draft stock at the Senior Bowl and showed he could be a rotational contributor right away in the NFL.
The Houston Texans are losing pieces on the defensive line to free agency and they could look to the end of the draft to fill those depth spots in the trenches. Mack is slated to go in the later rounds and the Houston Texans would be wise to target him there as he could have a tremendous impact spelling D.J. Reader.
