Houston Texans Rumors: Corner, not o-line, should be the first round target
By T.A. Mock
A top-heavy, shallow cornerback class
The Houston Texans secondary got exposed early and often this season. However, the safeties were solid. 2018 third round pick Justin Reid teamed up with Tyrann Mathieu, Andre Hal, and Kareem Jackson to lock down the backend but the corners were an issue.
Johnathan Joseph was solid but his age is really starting to show and the team shouldn’t rely on him to be lockdown corner anymore, that is, if he returns again. The rest of the group was decimated by injuries and when there weren’t injuries the play was poor. Jackson even moved back to corner, though, his play declined once he did.
In addition, the cornerback class is pretty top-heavy with some potential stars and then there is a drop off until the middle rounds where contributors could be found but the Texans need starters, not contributors.

All of these are reasons that the Houston Texans need to target cornerbacks in the first round of the 2019 NFL draft. There is some debate as to who the top guy is though many have LSU corner, Greedy Williams as that top guy. After him, the team could turn to guys like DeAndre Baker from Georgia, Byron Murphy from Washington, or Trayvon Mullen from Clemson.
Any one of those four guys could step in and be the Texans top corner for the 2019 season, that’s how talented they are. But, after those guys, they’ll be grasping at straws to try to find contributors. Those four guys won’t escape the first round, heck, they may not make it to 23rd overall.
So, the Houston Texans need to make sure they get one of them to solidify the secondary and give them a player who can go rep for rep with the league’s best wide receivers. Offensive line can be fixed with the second round picks with this deep class. This is what needs to happen.
