The Houston Astros Hall of Fame is an exciting, attractive prospect
By Dan Shedd
Throughout their 57 year history, the Houston Astros have had some great players entertain fans for generations. Now, the best of them will be enshrined.
The Houston Astros will unveil their plans on Tuesday to create an Astros Hall of Fame according to a report by Astros beat writer Brian McTaggart. This will be an extreme honor bestowed only upon the most iconic of Astros players.
President of Business Operations Reid Ryan announced that the new Hall of Fame will help consolidate all of the honors the Astros have given over the years to former players, coaches, and broadcasters in one space, which is something he has always wanted.
"“The Astros have had a great, rich history of baseball and since I took this job [in 2013], I really wanted to find a way to honor those former players that have given so much to our organization,” Astros president of business operations Reid Ryan said. “When you look at the way we’ve honored our players in the past through multiple ownership groups and leadership, it’s kind of been all over the board. We have some retired numbers, we have some names out on the Walk of Fame, we’ve had some people retire as Astros, but when you look at our team, we don’t have a Hall of Fame and a lot of other clubs do. We really need to have a way to honor the greats of our game and this will allow us to do that.” Must Read: 3 players with the most to gain in Spring Training"
The inaugural class will consist of Houston Astros players who have had their numbers retired by the club, which includes of course Hall of Famers Craig Biggio, Jeff Bagwell, Nolan Ryan, Jimmy Wynn, Jose Cruz, Larry Dierker, Don Wilson, and Jim Umbricht, and Mike Scott. It will also feature the Astros Walk of Fame members Joe Morgan, Bob Aspromonte, Joe Niekro, Shane Reynolds and former Astros broadcasters, Milo Hamilton and Gene Elston.
The inaugural class will be honored during the Astros Hall of Fame Weekend on August 2-4 with a pre-game on-field ceremony. It will be the highest honor an Astros player can receive.
An advisory board consisting of former Astros players and broadcasters along with media members will help select future classes. The Astros Hall of Fame will also house Astros artifacts from over the years as well. The Hall of Fame will replace Home Run Alley at Minute Maid Park beyond left field in the concourse.
As for future inductees, I would personally like to see former Astros Jose Lima and Darryl Kile be posthumously inducted into the Astros Hall of Fame because of their great contributions to the Astros during the 1990s. I would also like to see former Astro greats Derek Bell and Sean Berry of the Killer B’s, along with my personal favorite “The Big Puma” Lance Berkman make it.

Speaking of Berkman, He will be on the Major League Baseball Hall of Fame Ballot for the first time along with Astros teammate Roy Oswalt.
In 12 years with the Astros, The Big Puma had a .296 average,326 home runs and 1,090 RBI’s. He was a force to be reckoned with at the plate. One of the things I liked most about Berkman was his fun-loving personality, from the story of his Big Puma nickname to the story of Lance eating Twinkies while at Wrigley Field during a game against the Cubs.
Oswalt or “The Wizard of Os” as he was known as played 10 years with the Astros, locking in 143 wins-82 losses, having a 3.24 ERA and 1, 593 strikeouts.
These two guys helped make the Houston Astros a feared team during their careers and deserve the Hall of Fame distinction. You can bet that these two will be inducted into the Astros Hall of Fame sooner, rather than later regardless of their efforts to get into the MLB’s Hall of Fame.
I am really glad the Houston Astros have decided to do this, there are so many deserving players throughout our history that have made the Houston Astros a fun team to watch throughout the years. This will be an attraction for years to come and will be a sight to see for fans of all ages.
