The Houston Texans re-signed Seantrel Henderson to a one year deal on Sunday in spite of him missing 2018 with an injury. Here’s why this is the right call.

You want to know the NFL’s worst kept secret? Well, besides all of the recent officiating conspiracy theories, it’s that the Houston Texans have a putrid offensive line and have had it for a long time. In fact, despite a few solid years, this has been a storyline that has permeated the history of the franchise.

I mean, who knows how David Carr would have turned out had he had an offensive line that was mildly capable. He might have actually had the chance to develop and grow as a quarterback. Now, the next time that the team drafts a quarterback high in the first round, they follow the same formula, go cheap on the offensive line.

Carr deserved better than and Deshaun Watson absolutely deserves better than a patchwork offensive line. As an added benefit now, the NFL has the rookie wage scale so the Texans have Watson on the cheap so they could actually spend on the offensive line.

Instead, the Houston Texans have relied on other team’s castaways and mid to late round picks to get the job done. And just in case you were doing the Bird Box Challenge all year long, IT DOESN’T WORK. Sure Watson does some of his best work while improvising but imagine what he could do if he could actually develop more in the pocket.

Anyways, rant over. The Texans did try to put together a better unit up front for Watson this season. They signed Seantrel Henderson, Senio Kelemete, and Zach Fulton while also drafting Martinas Rankin in the third round. But, none of those guys exactly inspires a lot of confidence.

Henderson was probably one of the more intriguing additions because of his previous pedigree that had only been hampered by injury and disease. He was expected to come in a solidify the right side of the line, to keep Watson upright. Unfortunately, the experiment ended quickly as he lasted about half of the first game of the season before going down with a season-ending injury.

The Texans then rotated through Julie’n Davenport, Kendall Lamm, and Rankin throughout the rest of the season in order to fill his void. Lamm, surprisingly, did the best job filling in at right tackle but he did it at a below average level.

More from House of Houston

The Houston Texans desperately need better play than that in order to keep Watson healthy for a long time. The results were apparent as Watson began the season so banged up that he had to travel to Jacksonville on a bus in order to play in a game.

The team has got to know that they need to do better for Watson moving forward and that starts in 2019. They took the first step to that this past weekend in a solid albeit unspectacular move of re-signing Henderson to another one year contract worth just under $5 million total and under $2 million in guaranteed money.

Just like last year, the Henderson signing isn’t going to raise the bar and elevate this unit by itself. However, it’s a start to ensuring Watson can stay upright and in the pocket more often than not. Henderson obviously showed enough last offseason and preseason to warrant the Houston Texans desiring a return. So, here’s to hoping this is a sign of things to come.
