Seth Beer is the longest shot on this list to truly make an impact with the Houston Astros this season. A series of unfortunate events would have to happen in order for him to have a shot at making an impact. Players would have to struggle. Players would have to get hurt. So, it’s not ideal but, boy, it could be great.

On top of guys struggling and getting hurt, Beer would also have to destroy the minor leagues and have a rapid ascension. But, none of this is out of reach for Beer who did some quick rising in his first partial season as a pro.

Beer was primarily an outfielder while at Clemson, though, he doesn’t project particularly well there as he isn’t fast and doesn’t have a great glove. However, that wasn’t the reason the Houston Astros selected him in the first round of the 2018 draft. The picked him for his ability to be an incredible pure hitter.

In a mere 67 games across three leagues in the minors, Beer had 79 hits, 12 home runs, and 42 RBIs while also managing a +.300 batting average and .500 slugging percentage. This type of production will be his calling card in the majors and make him valuable for a long time.

For the big league club, Beer will likely split time between first base and designated hitter. That is currently a spot that will sport a battle in Spring Training. Beer probably won’t have a shot at the job out of Spring Training but he could get a shot down the road when rosters expand, perhaps even before.

The Houston Astros have a lot of other guys that could provide an impact either for the team or as a trade asset. Yordan Alvarez, Corbin Martin, and J.B. Bukauskas are all players that I could, conceivably, see fill either role, as well.
