Houston Texans Rumors: Five players to target with the 23rd pick
By T.A. Mock
Cody Ford, OG, Oklahoma
Offensive guard is the opposite of a sexy pick. However, the Houston Texans, as I mentioned previously, desperately need offensive line help. The Texans saw first hand what an elite guard can add to a team by playing the Colts and Quenton Nelson. Now before we go further, Cody Ford is not and won’t be Nelson but he could be a very good NFL player.
Ford is a brutal mauler at the point of attack and looks like he believes he can destroy anyone and everyone who lines up opposite of him. Ford played tackle for Oklahoma though his style of play and athletic profile paint the picture of an elite guard. He is athletic but he is also incredibly strong and has tremendous power.
He struggled with speed rush in college, a reason why a switch to guard may be in order, but he is able to absorb any and all bull rushes. He is also a grinder that finishes every play and never once gives up. He blocks to the whistle which often results in his man on the ground.
He would bring tenacity and a mean-streak to the Houston Texans offensive line which currently has no identity. Ford wouldn’t be a flashy selection but a pick like this is how Watson stays upright and how the Texans become perennial contenders.
Other options: Elgton Jenkins (Mississippi State)
Elgton Jenkins is widely regarded as the best center prospect in the 2019 draft. Nick Martin held down that spot this year and was the only returning starter from 2017. However, that doesn’t mean he should be guaranteed anything. Both Jenkins and Martin could play guard as well as center. Drafting Jenkins could ensure the best five guys trot out onto the field to protect Watson.
