The Houston Texans weren’t able to advance beyond the Wild Card round in the playoffs. In spite of that, the season was still a success. Here’s why.

The Houston Texans‘ loss to the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Wild Card game was certainly a letdown for a fan base with high expectations to reach the ultimate goal. But, while it’s ok to be disappointed, fans can reflect on this season as a tremendous success with high hopes for greater things beyond.

I don’t think anyone, including this author, would want to try and find silver linings for an embarrassing loss in front of the home fans. Sure, there is no way that anyone can figure out a positive thing about this season because of abysmal playcalling from Bill O’Brien and terrible protection from the O-line.

Beyond that, there is also the lack of secondary presence and the play of Deshaun Watson. Then, of course, no one wants to find reasons to, not celebrate, but take pride in having a good season because fans are sick and tired of just getting to the playoffs.

Well, in a world where hot takes, love them or hate them, have suppressed themselves to making ratings and viewership at a sky-high, this author is about to have a hot take for the ages. That is that the 2018 season for the Texans was a tremendous success.

Okay, okay, hold the tomatoes. I know you don’t want to hear that right now because the Texans got a butt-whooping from a red-hot Colts team. A team who, by the way, started the season 1-5 and reached the playoffs by winning nine of their final ten games.

I completely understand if you don’t agree with me here because I’m questioning my sanity with this hot take right now. But, perhaps, if I could maybe throw something out there for you to consider. Then maybe you can consider it.

It’s tough because there is still the feeling that the Houston Texans were capable of winning the Super Bowl this season. But then, they get to the playoffs and, sadly, fell right into the same narrative again. While this loss was as demoralizing like the 2015 loss to the Chiefs, in which the Texans were shut out, it still hurts because no one prepares well for a season-ending loss.

In hindsight, I don’t think anyone that watches or truly gets the game really believed this was the year for the Texans to win it all. We all want to get to the Super Bowl and we will one day. But this year wasn’t meant to be. It’s a part of the process of becoming great. The Texans need to learn to lose before they can win.

But all the while, next season should be promising and exciting for this team as we hope to take the next step. So why was the 2018 season a success? Let’s take a look at three reasons why.
