In the first big trade of the new year, the Houston Astros have traded JD Davis to the New York Mets in exchange for some promising prospects.

The first big news for the Houston Astros in 2019 comes in the form of a trade with the New York Mets. Houston Astros beat writer Brian McTaggart has reported that infielders J.D. Davis and Cody Bohanek are being traded to the Mets in exchange for three promising prospects.

Davis, who was drafted by the Astros in the 2014 MLB Draft, hit .175, a home run and 5 RBI’s over his 42 games with the club in 2018. Davis played first base, third base, left field, and even pitched in a game in his time with the Astros. He also spent some time with the now former Astros minor league affiliate, Fresno Grizzlies, where Davis had great success this past season.

Davis won the Pacific League batting title while hitting .342 in 85 games, he also had 25 doubles, and 17 home runs to go with 81 RBI’s. As previously mentioned, Davis struggled to get the bat going in the bigs last year but played some really adept third base. He was too good in the minors to not turn his big league luck around sooner or later. Additionally, he didn’t have much left to prove so, good on the Houston Astros for getting him to a spot where he can earn more playing time.

In return, the Houston Astros will receive prospects Ross Adolph, Scott Manea, and Luis Santana.  Aldolph was a 12th round selection out of Toledo University in the 2018 draft and plays in the outfield. Manea is a burly catcher who started is pro career in 2016. Santana signed out of the Dominican Republic as a 16-year-old. The now 19-year-old primarily plays second base but could be moved all over the infield and potentially in the outfield.

Adolph won the 2018 MVP for his season with short season Class A Brooklyn, batting .276 over 61 games with 9 doubles, 12 triples, 7 home runs, 35 RBI’s and 14 steals. With some speed, he spent the majority of his time in center field but also so significant playing time in both corners.

Manea was a South Atlantic League All Star in 2018 with Class A Columbia, hitting .261, with 12 home runs and 53 RBI’s while drawing 35 walks.  Behind the plate, Manea threw out nearly 40 % of all base runners. 2018 was by far the best season of his professional career. The Astros desperately needed organizational depth at catcher so Manea definitely fills that role.

Our friends at The Crawfish Boxes gave us some promising news on Santana. FanGraphs is releasing their prospect lists soon and Santana was set to crack the Mets 10 best prospects and number 10 overall. He may not be that high in the Houston Astros farm system but he is definitely the gem of the trade.

There is a reason why they are so excited about Santana, his stats speak for themselves. He led his Kingsport Rookie League team in batting .348, 35 RBI’s and four home runs and eight steals. His .348 average ranks fifth in the Appalachian League. During his three seasons with the Mets, Santana has hit .329 with 98 RBI’s, with a .891 OPS.

Talk about impressive!

I’m really excited about these guys because they are already super talented and can only get better in the Astros organization. The Houston Astros have a great track record of developing players into corner stone type players. Remember Jose Altuve, George Springer and Carlos Correa? The future is bright for these guys coming in.

I also would be remiss if I didn’t thank J.D. Davis for his contributions to the Astros organization and wish him the best of luck to him with the Mets. So, thank you J.D., here’s to hoping he carves out a fine career in New York.
