Houston Astros: Top 30 players in franchise history
By T.A. Mock
24. Kevin Bass, OF, 1982 – 1989, 1993 – 1994
Kevin Bass was a very good but never really great player for the Houston Astros. In his prime, he provided some timely power, good speed, and defensive versatility. His best season came in 1986 when he hit .311, had 20 homers, and 22 steals. This was his lone All-Star appearance.
His home run power numbers began to fall after that vaunted 1986 season, however, by then he was wonderfully adapted to the Astrodome where his power displayed itself in the form of consistent doubles and triples.
He was a steady contributor in both of stints with the Astros, he never shined in one particular area. He had 87 home runs, 468 RBIs, and 120 stolen bases during his ten years as an Astro. He also had a .278 batting average during those ten years as well with three seasons above .300.
Bass was a core player for some very good Astros teams in the mid-80s. He played in over 1,100 games as an Astro over the course a little more than a decade. His timely power, versatility, and longevity earn him this slot in the top 30.
