Houston Astros: Top 30 players in franchise history

4. Mike Scott, P, 1983 – 1991
The Houston Astros acquired Mike Scott from the New York Mets in 1983 in a move that would make today’s Astros proud. The traded for him following a season where he could get hardly anyone out, surrendering 11.3 hits per nine innings, a 5.14 ERA, and a 1.67 WHIP.
Switching to pitching home games in the Astrodome undoubtedly helped out but it appeared he also was finally able to figure stuff out in Houston. Scott was an incredibly solid pitcher that combined with the legend below to form an outstanding duo.
His Cy Young season in 1986 was outstanding. He had a 2.22 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, and 306 strikeouts in 275.1 innings. That incredible peak put a cap on a great career for this Houston Astros legend. Despite having his number retired, Scott remains one of the most underrated Astros of all time.
Many view Scott as a one year wonder after that 1986 season but he should be remembered for more than that. He was a complete pitcher during his tenure as an Astro and should be remembered as such. His WHIP stands in the top five in Astros history to this day, which is particularly impressive considering how his time as a Met ended.
