Houston Astros: Top 30 players in franchise history
By T.A. Mock
20. Ken Caminiti, 3B, 1987 – 1994, 1999 – 2000
As previously mentioned, Ken Caminiti is in the conversation for the best third baseman in team history along with Rader and potentially Bregman down the road. He was a polarizing figure who sported an excellent glove and a live bat.
Caminiti didn’t peak until his stint with the Padres where he won his MVP but he admitted to using PEDs during that time. His power numbers are slightly vaulted due to playing home games in the Astrodome but he was a more than a solid player in the hot corner and had 10 solid seasons as an Astros.
Caminiti officially played 10 seasons in Houston though, his first two were split between the majors and the minors while his last two were incredibly marred by injury following his time in San Diego. So, his prime time in Houston was between 1999 and 2004.
His numbers don’t pop off the page during his 10 seasons as an Astro but he still had a really good career as an Astro and he definitely deserves this spot on the list. PEDs aside, Caminiti had a great career and deserves to be remembered for it.
