A recent interview with baseball super agent, Scott Boras yielded THIS response when asked by MLB Network on Sirius XM about the former Houston Astros utility man, Marwin Gonzalez:
"We have met with 14 teams….Every team brings up the name, Marwin Gonzalez."
Why wouldn’t they? A solid contact and power bat that can play 5 different fielding positions. Teams across the league are salivating like they’re at a gourmet buffet on this one. Ironically, Boras also mentions in the interview that Gonzalez has received the nickname “Swiss G.”
Yes, in a perfect world, the Astros would clearly get him back with no problems. But that’s not gonna happen here. Teams with the big salaries are going to reach out to him the most aggressively. I’m assuming the Yankees or Red Sox are already waving some figures at him even as I’m composing this article.
Whoever is fortunate enough to get him, Gonzalez has the rest of his big league career pretty much set. Only making just over $5 million in 2018 will launch out the big negotiating guns for where he lands in 2019.
In preparation, the Astros have already announced plans to have Yuli Gurriel be their go-to utility guy for 2019, and possibly beyond that. After all, La Pina can play the same positions as Gonzalez. Not to mention, Tyler White is a utility guy that can be used as well.
Let’s face it though, Gonzalez is the golden egg that the goose laid a long time ago. Rest assured, someone is going to swipe him up and give him all the gold he wants!
