Houston Astros: Three most disappointing players from the 2018 season
By T.A. Mock
The Houston Astros did not disappoint this season in spite of not repeating as champions. However, these three guys did disappoint this season.
Following the 2017 World Series victory, emotions and expectations were riding at an all-time high for the Houston Astros and fans alike. The team rode that to making moves in the offseason in an effort to be the first team to repeat as champs in nearly two decades.
In their lone big move of the offseason, they went out and added another bonafide ace to the staff in Gerrit Cole, this deal worked out splendidly, even more so than anyone could have imagined. The team also made multiple moves in season adding Martin Maldonado, Ryan Pressly, and Roberto Osuna.
While at some points during the season the Astros appeared to struggle and be worse off than the 2017 squad, this team was actually better than last year’s when it’s all said and done in spite of stiffer competition within the division. In fact, the 2018 Astros were one of the best teams in franchise history, the best if you look solely at record where they won a franchise-high 103 games.
In spite of that, the Houston Astros ultimately fell short of repeating as champions when the Red Sox defeated them in five games in the ALCS. So, this season could very well have been a disappointment but overall, this was an impressive team that dominated the vast majority of the league all year long.
The Astros were carried by the usual suspects, George Springer, Jose Altuve, and Justin Verlander. They were joined, in a big way, by the likes of Alex Bregman and Cole this year as well. This is a cast of players that’ll be good for a long, long time.
However, there were some players that did disappoint this season in spite of the success. Their reasons for the disappointment may differ but at the end of the day, they were disappointing nearly all year long. Let’s take a look.
