The Houston Astros have a vacancy at their designated hitter position. Evan Gattis has been either in a platoon role or the primary DH for the past few seasons. Gattis is a free agent and the team probably won’t bring him back. So, they have a spot to fill in that role.

Tyler White may get the first crack at the DH role but he’s always been a streaky hitter for the Astros and may need somebody to give him some rest during those times. Adding a player that could DH and play the outfield, sort of like Carlos Beltran did a few years ago, could be the solution. Curtis Granderson is the guy to fill that role.

More from House of Houston

Granderson has had a long, storied carry that has seen him be voted to several All-Star games and even several appearances on MVP ballots even though he never placed in the top three. He would bring a strong veteran presence with a winning pedigree.

Granderson would provide a bat in the lineup that still has some significant pop and patience that always him to consistently get on base even when he struggled to make contact. Though he’ll be 38 next season, he also still has some decent speed left in him and good baserunning instincts that will be beneficial for an aggressive Astros team.

Inking Granderson won’t be a flashy move by any means but at a $4 to $6 million salary on a one year deal is the type of move this team could make that could elevate the offense next season.

The Houston Astros have the capital to make a big move but with several young players needing extensions, that may not be the best course of action. Pursuing value contracts like these could allow the team to improve while saving for those core player extensions.
