Thing #3: The bewildering situation out front for the Houston Texans

Hey, I have a great trivia question for you today!

Who managed to do worse at their job with a better surrounding cast and get a brand new contract?!

Guess! Guess!

I knew you’d get it right!

I am going to be frank with you, and state the true fact that O’Brien’s record got worse over a four-year span. O’Brien had received a new contract, extending his tenure by four more seasons.  The only reason why the decision was plausible was because the Texans must’ve been convinced from seven games with O’Brien and Watson that this new pairing could be categorized as the next Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.

Today, I was going to write an article entirely on why O’Brien needed to be fired. I was going to write how I have seen no improvement in what he’s done over the last few years and I saw only a small glimpse of what the offense should’ve been long time ago. The offensive guru wasn’t getting it done fellas and despite his development with Watson, I felt like I couldn’t keep dragging on excuses on why to keep him here.

But there is one small problem with writing that….

It wouldn’t make any bit of sense because of this damn win streak!

I feel like walking up to O’Brien and asking him, “What game are you playing at?” like the way that chef did to Linguini in Ratatouille after Remy the Rat made that soup.

Based on how the Texans played in the first three weeks, losing to Eli Manning, Blaine Gabbert the superhero backup as well as Watson’s struggles in the first few games, I was convinced that O’Brien needed to go.

The Houston Texans made Eli Manning look like the GOAT, despite the roster being relatively healthy.  He certainly looked far from the regular Eli we know, who is Peyton Manning‘s little brother and likes to make a lot of faces that are more than meme worthy.  They made the Tennessee Titans look amazing with a back up quarterback that I used to consider a joke up until now.  They let Brady beat them despite the fact that he didn’t have any major offensive weapons other than Rob Gronkowski.

Oh yeah, and did I forget to mention the beautiful and very encouraging words O’Brien would say

after every loss that seemed very original and not common place? This isn’t the exact quote but it’s a strong general idea. Click the quote to see what is usually said:

I don’t know John. I need to coach better. I need to make better plays. This loss is on me, and we need to find a way to win.

Well no crap Sherlock.

I couldn’t keep my head up. I was pretty damn convinced that O’Brien needed to go. We needed a fresh start because I felt like we were throwing away the potential of an experienced team with many star players headed by Watson, one of the future faces of the NFL.

But out of nowhere comes this damn win streak to mess with my head and now I’m clueless on what to say about his situation. The Houston Texans were lucky to beat the Indianapolis Colts after one of the dumber play calls I’ve seen in a while and I’m going to say that the other two wins were because of excellent plays made by some experienced players on our team.

Or was it the coaching?

Only one win has shown me that O’Brien can do it well, and that was against Jacksonville. He worked well with Deshaun’s injury and managed to open up a strong running game despite horrible offensive line play throughout the year.  I’m going to pretend that Jacksonville wasn’t depleted with injured players. Just accept the credit I gave to B.O.B. because I don’t know how long it’ll last.
