The Houston Rockets selected Isaiah Hartenstein in the second round of the 2017 draft. The 7’1″ center was born in Oregon to a profession German basketball player turned coach so he has great basketball roots and has spent time with the German national team.

The Rockets stashed Hartenstein on their G-League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers. Last year, he had a pretty solid yet unspectacular season. It earned him a spot on the summer league roster where he began to showcase some intriguing potential.

He averaged 10 points and 8 rebounds while shooting 52% from the field. However, what was more impressive was the defensive ability he displayed. He averaged 2.5 blocks and 1 steal per game which anchored the Rockets summer league defense that led the team to a 4-1 record.

Hartenstein also slimmed down during the offseason showed a better ability to switch from big men onto guards. He also, reportedly, was able to switch onto Harden and stop him twice in a scrimmage during training camp.

Hartenstein had a solid preseason debut against the Pacers a few nights ago. He played 12 minutes, scored nine points (including one three), two rebounds, and one steal. Unfortunately, he injured his ankle and wasn’t able to play against the Spurs yesterday afternoon.

However, once he heals up and continues to impress, Hartenstein should be able to carve out minutes behind Capela at the five.
