Houston Texans: The good, the bad, the ugly from week four
By T.A. Mock
Pass coverage
Quick, do an exercise with me. Let’s list all of the excessive adjectives for bad. Putrid, terrible, horrendous, abysmal, awful, atrocious, let me know if you have any more. All of those, outside of a few plays, describe the performance of the Houston Texans pass coverage today.
Shareece Wright had a couple good plays and Zach Cunningham had at least one good play. Outside of that, I am having a hard time recalling any positives from this game in regards to this pass coverage. Countless players were left wide open and the guys that weren’t consistently got great separation.
It probably could have been a lot worse but the Colts receivers dropped a lot of passes. Speaking of those receivers, only one, T.Y. Hilton, has a credible track record and he left the game early. This pass coverage made all of their receivers and tight ends look elite which, FYI, they’re not.

Once again, the steady trend of the Houston Texans playing undisciplined football continued. This year false starts have abounded. Clowney had an unsportsmanlike conduct foul called on him in a game he didn’t even play in. Ultimately, things like this have derailed this team more than anything else.
Today was no different. After Davenport got benched this week because of his undisciplined play, Martinas Rankin picked up the slack and collected another false start penalty of his own. Clowney had two encroachment penalties. Maybe the worst of them all, Tyler Ervin had a penalty for blocking after calling for a fair catch.
For a supposedly hardnosed coach, Bill O’Brien sure does have an undisciplined football team that struggles with the basics of football. This team needs to get this sorted out quick because it’s nearly impossible to win games when you’re playing against yourself.
A win is a win. That’s the main thing to take away from today. There are things to build off of and things to improve. Hopefully, this is a step in the right direction for the team and a start to a great rest of the year.
