#5 Gerrit Cole Throws One-Hit Shutout Against Arizona

So Gerrit Cole is not old, but he is merry. He was a very big asset needed when the Houston Astros acquired him in a trade with Pittsburgh during the offseason. At the time, this was a huge coup for this Astros team but no one could’ve predicted what he has accomplished this season.

You can look at his first start as an Astro and think that was his coming out party. However, you might have to go deeper and find his start against the Diamondbacks to be more fitting.

On this night, Cole was dominant throwing a complete game shutout allowing one hit, while striking out a career-high 16 batters. This would be in part because the Astros had already cruised to an 8-0 lead in which they would win the game. Cole also struck out sixteen Diamondbacks in route to this victory.

To this day, Cole has not had a better performance like this one. But even so, he has earned the spot of being a deadly force on an Astros pitching squad that had three pitchers in the All-Star Game. Add three more valuable members to that team and you have an All-Star Game for the ages.
