The Houston Texans tried to shop at the bargain bin to fill this roster and their plan has backfired with an 0-3 start. What’s going on? Take a look.

The Houston Texans are currently in a state of panic. They have a lot of different issues but most of them could have been solved with the franchise actually spending some money in the off season.

Leading up to the start of the season, the Houston Texans had and actually still have a lot of money to spend on valuable free agents.  The team actually has $25.5 million available and it’s apparent that they’re hoarding it away as if it were rainy day.

It was thought that they were saving the money for a Jadeveon Clowney extension but no deal was made before the start of the NFL season, likely meaning that talks between his camp and the Houston Texans have been tabled until 2019, when he’s a free agent.

With an 0-3 start, it’s storming for the Houston Texans and they need to do what it takes to improve the depth on this roster.  However, they chose to do some bargain bin shopping this past off season to address multiple positions on this team’s offensive line and it has bit them in the you know what.

The Houston Texans key free agent signings this off season consisted of: Tyrann Mathieu, Aaron Colvin, Senio Kelemete, Zach Fulton and Seantrel Henderson.

On the defensive side of the ball, Tyrann has given us flashes of the old Honey Badger and has looked like an above-average starting safety. On the other hand, Colvin has been consistently targeted and has not stood up to the challenge at times early into this season.

Now, on to the real reason why the Houston Texans are 0-3 — let’s talk about the sporadic offense as well as inconsistency with the offensive line. The line, to say the least, has been below average as a whole.

rookie season with the team, to the right side.

This also warranted the Houston Texans to insert Martinas Rankin, a rookie drafted in this year’s third-round who missed most of the preseason, into the starting lineup at left tackle.  LEFT TACKLE FOLKS!  This is maddening to see out of guy who looks more of like a natural at the guard position!  But apparently, the Houston Texans feel that they can mold him into a professional tackle.  We’ll definitely have to see how that goes.

Kelemete has barely looked average and hurt his knee prior to last week’s game against the New York Giants.  Fulton has been the best of the aforementioned trio and surprise, he was also the highest paid, inking a four-year, $28 million deal with $13 million guaranteed this past off season.

Now I say all of this so that you can take a retrospective look back at all the opportunities the Texans had to improve their offensive line. With plenty of cap space, a young star quarterback to protect and a bright outlook for the season, the Texans were expected to sign some impact players.

This off season, the Houston Texans could have signed players like Andrew Norwell, Mike Pouncey, Nate Solder, Josh Sitton and Justin Pugh, just to name a few. All of those players are considered to be some of the best at their positions or at least above-average starters.

However, the Texans chose to look for bargains and now they are paying for it.
